Alcohol & Drug Program
Chemco has always supported the implementation of the Construction Owners Association of Alberta`s "Best Practice" for alcohol and drugs. The 2005 Canadian Model for Providing a Safe Workplace: Alcohol and Drug Guidelines and Work Rule promotes a safe and productive workforce. Chemco`s approach to this "Best Practice" is that this is a tool to FIND and FIX not FIND and FIRE. Our implementation of this policy included developing guidelines to support the Alcohol and Drug Policy. The guidelines identify requirements of supervision and management as well as workers. In the event that a worker was to test positive for a post-incident test or reasonable cause they are not fired. The worker is suspended and offered assistance through our Return to Work Guideline. This Guideline is provided to our workers and the respective Union Halls.
In the event a worker chooses not to participate in the Return to Work Program, he/she is not eligible for employment with Chemco until such program is completed. Our program also includes the requirement for a follow-up test when they return to work for Chemco. Our approach has provided some high dividends. We maintain valuable employees; the employees develop greater loyalty to Chemco and share their experiences with other workers. With the sharing of information among workers there is recognition that Chemco is concerned for the health and safety of its workforce and others.
