The Chemco Knife

Chemco solicited employees on which knives they used on site and also asked for their input into a knife design. They contacted many manufacturers and looked at different knife designs. Research aided in selecting a design that would provide the safest style for the tasks faced in the electrical trade. We completed field tests which resulted in positive feedback and manufactured the knife.

Chemco willingly shares this knife with other employers.  To date Chemco has supplied more than 16,000 knives to other employers.

Safe Use of Knives Video

Chemco developed two videos,

1. Safe Use of Knives
Proper use of knives, proper selection of knives and alternative tools available for stripping cable.

2. Safe Work Practice for use of Knives
The videos were shot on the Syncrude UE-1 Project with the employees we had on site. The videos use simple teaching techniques. Tell them, show them and follow up on their learnings.

These videos were shown to all existing employees and are now a part of our new hire orientation. During orientation, Chemco provides all employees with a knife after watching the videos. To enhance our knife program we have included a knife sharpener to our incentive program.
Chemco makes this video available to other employers.  Contact Chemco safety at 780.436.9570 for more information.

Grinder Safety

Chemco, along with KBR and The Edmonton Regional Safety Committee (ERSC) have created the three part DVD series detailing the proper methods for operating power tools used for buffing and cutting.

The three parts are:
Part One: Proper use and handling of angle grinders.
Part Two: Bench and Pedestal Grinders
Part Three: Portable Abrasive Grinders with Cutting Disks

These videos cover a step-by-step process starting with inspection and choosing the right materials for the job – such as the proper cutting disk, the settings required as well as wearing the proper personal protective equipment. It then continues with the proper usage of the tool, including using it at the correct angle, rpm selection of disks, proper storage, clean-up and housekeeping.

This video is available to all employers through the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA).

Supervisor’s Safety

Chemco has created a video based on the retelling of Gary Leblanc’s, true-to-life account of a workplace accident that leads to the death of a young worker with one of Gary’s previous employers. Gary’s story summarizes his experience of this unfortunate accident and his story is intended to raise the awareness of supervisor’s responsibility for workplace health and safety.

Even though the incident happened with Gary’s previous employer, Chemco shared Gary’s story with other employers in the industry. As interest grew Chemco wanted to ensure this valuable message was available to industry. As a result, Chemco provided the video to the Alberta Construction Safety Association. Today, this video is available to all employers through the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA).
