Petro-Canada Refinery
Edmonton, Alberta
Chemco first started contracting on site in the summer of 2001 on Tank Farm 1 and since been successful on numerous site projects. Chemco has completed over 1,500,000 man-hours of electrical and mechanical instrumentation installations on the Petro Canada Edmonton Refinery to date without a lost time incident.
The scopes included site projects such as: Tank Farm I and II, Sulphur-in-Gas (SIG), SIG Mods, Praxair H2 Line, EDD Deep Undergrounds, EDD ISBL, EDD OSBL, RCP F & I and now the present scope of U & O/Revamps and Sulphur Recovery Unit. The work ranged from installing many multiple conduit duct-banks, thousands of feet of cable tray and electric heat trace and millions of feet of cable. Some of the complexities of these projects involved the construction and commissioning of nine 13.8kV and 5kV substations. These substations contained lighting, fire alarm, HVAC, 208/120kV distributions, 480kV and 5kV MCC lineups, UPS and 125VDC systems and 13.8kV and 5kV switchgear.
Chemco has been involved in the construction of two new I/O buildings, upgraded two others and will be involved in building another 4 more. This work involved installations like UPS and DCS systems, 208/120V power systems, early warning VESDA systems, HVAC, fire alarm, computer floor grounding, tray and lighting. The upgrading of existing I/O buildings call for extreme scheduling as all remained operational during construction. Close coordination with the client and nightshift resulted in successful completions.

Chemco’s mechanical instrumentation department worked on instrument and panel installations that have involved thousands of feet of tubing and bundle. Other major tasks including installation of instrument air and sample systems along with calibration and commissioning.
Upon the construction mechanical completion of the new plants, Petro-Canada placed trust in Chemco’s staff to assist in their start-up and commissioning. This involved verifying the systems proper operation and assisting Petro-Canada with corrective modifications where required.

Chemco’s ability to remain pro-active with the determination to provide a quality installation and strict safety standards have given Chemco an excellent advantage in providing our client with a formula for success.
